Advertisement Requirements

Smithsonian Magazine is now printed direct-to-plate and only accepts digital files. We will accept most post-processed files like PDF, DCS 2.0 and TIFF/IT. For ads measuring 1/6 page and smaller we will accept a PDF or an Adobe Illustrator EPS file. Call Rachel Gilmore, 202-275-2219, or Kate Balch, 202-275-2056 in the Production office with any questions or concerns.

Media supported:
CD-ROM and Zip disks.
 
Media labeling:
Issue date, agency name, phone number, return address (for return of materials), list of contents and advertiser name.
 
High-End files:
TIFF/IT-P1, PDF, Scitex and Scitex handshake LW CT. All LW files should be res 80 (2032 dpi) and CT should be at least res 12 (304.8 dpi). Please note our sizes and live area below. NOTE: If you are sending in Quark native files as back up to your TIFF/IT, PDF or Illustrator EPS files, please make sure that they are Quark version 4. We will not be upgrading to Quark 5 until it can be thoroughly tested by our prepress and production departments.

Proofs:
DDCP (Kodak Approval, Screen True Rite, Optronics Intelliproof, etc.), Ink jet (Scitex Iris, DuPont Waterproof, etc.), Dye Sublimation (Imation Rainbow, Tektronix Phaser, Kodak 9000, etc).
 
Inserts:
Copy approval of content is required prior to acceptance. Special specifications are required. Call Sally Kingsley at 202-275-1975.
 
Issue Dates:
Published monthly.

Publisher will hold materials for a maximum of 12 months after last use. Unless advertiser or agency requests return, materials will be destroyed.

BINDING – Saddle wire. Page trim size: 8 3/8" x 10 7/8". Bleed allowance: 1/8" at head, foot and face. Safety for bleed ads: 1/4" inside trim. Gutter safety: 3/32". Page is three columns, each column 2 1/4" wide.

*Gutter Safety: When a headline crosses over the gutter in a spread a 3/32" total gap is necessary to read type correctly.

Contract Information

In consideration of the acceptance of the advertisement (subject always to the terms and conditions of our Rate Card), the agency and the advertiser must, in respect of the contents of the advertisement, indemnify and save the Publisher harmless against any expense arising from claims or actions against the Publisher because of the publication of the contents of the advertisement.

Space orders are due on or before closing date and may not be canceled by the advertiser after that date.

The Publisher's office reserves the right to reject any advertising for any reason at any time even though a reservation has been previously acknowledged and even though a product or account has been directly solicited by a representative. All advertisements must be clearly and prominently identified by the trademark and/or signature of the advertiser.

All advertisements are accepted and published by the Publisher upon the representation that the agency and/or advertiser is authorized to publish the entire contents and subject matter thereof.

In the event of a printing error, the Publisher's liability is limited to a makegood of the advertisement.

Publisher is not responsible for errors in key numbers.

No conditions, printed or otherwise, appearing on contracts, orders or copy instructions, that conflict with the Publisher's policies will be binding on the Publisher. Insertion orders with disclaimers will not be accepted.

Advertising units that are split run appear in main run circulation only, not in single copy sales.

Orders or contracts that specify position will be considered by the Publisher to be requests only.

Rates and units of space subject to change by the Publisher.
